Bakra Eid Ahead: Maharashtra Govt Orders Crackdown on Illegal Cow Transportation and Slaughter
Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announces strict action against illegal cow transportation, cattle smuggling, and unauthorized slaughterhouses across Maharashtra ahead of Bakra Eid.
Ahead of Bakra Eid, the Maharashtra government has taken a strong stand against illegal transportation of cows, unauthorized slaughterhouses, and cruelty towards cattle across the state. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik issued a stern warning stating that cattle smuggling and illegal slaughter “will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”
Following directives from the Chief Minister, the Transport Department has ordered a statewide special inspection drive. Regional Transport Offices (RTOs), Deputy RTO officials, border check posts, and transport enforcement teams have been instructed to carry out intensive operations from May 25 to May 28, 2026.
Speaking on the issue, Minister Pratap Sarnaik said that under the efforts of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, the indigenous cow has been granted the status of “Rajyamata” in Maharashtra. He stated that for the Hindu community, the cow is a matter of faith and cultural significance, and those involved in illegal slaughter and transportation would face strict legal consequences.
He further alleged that cattle smuggling increases during festive periods, with animals being overcrowded in vehicles, kept hungry, and transported in inhumane conditions. “This is not only a violation of law but also an attack on the sentiments of the Hindu community,” Sarnaik said, adding that severe action would be taken against offenders.
According to a circular issued by the Transport Commissioner’s Office, special vehicle checking drives and nakabandis will be conducted at sensitive routes, border areas, and major cities including Mumbai. Vehicles transporting animals will undergo strict inspection to verify permits, certificates, and compliance with animal welfare regulations.
The minister also clarified that no leniency would be shown to violators of the Motor Vehicles Act, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, and central government transport rules. Vehicles found transporting cattle illegally would be seized immediately.
The special enforcement drive will be carried out in coordination with local police, traffic police, the Animal Husbandry Department, and various cow protection and animal welfare organizations. Dedicated teams have also been formed to prevent cattle supply to illegal slaughterhouses.
“Cow protection is not just a legal matter but an issue connected to Hindutva and cultural identity. The government will not bow before those who commit cruelty against innocent animals,” Sarnaik asserted.
Authorities have also been directed to submit detailed reports of the action taken during the special campaign to the state government.
