Sanitation Workers Warn of Indefinite Strike if Pending Demands Are Not Resolved Within 7 Days
Sanitation workers from Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation warned of an indefinite strike if their pending demands related to gratuity, salaries, DA arrears, and leave payments are not resolved within seven days.
Sanitation workers from the health, garden, and crematorium departments of Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation staged a strong protest at the municipal headquarters on May 18 over several long-pending demands and alleged administrative delays.
The protest took place during the visit of Mukesh Sonu Sarwan to the municipal headquarters. Workers gathered at the entrance gate to submit a memorandum highlighting their grievances and demanding immediate action from the administration.
According to workers, security personnel at the headquarters allegedly stopped them from submitting the memorandum, leading to tension at the entrance gate where some workers staged a sit-in protest. Following the situation, Mukesh Sonu Sarwan personally came downstairs to accept the memorandum from the workers and assured them that efforts would be made to resolve the issues at the earliest.
The workers raised several key demands, including immediate payment of pending gratuity for health department workers, DA arrears from 2021 to 2024 for garden department employees, pending leave salaries, and timely monthly wages for crematorium workers who allegedly face severe working conditions and salary delays of two to three months.
Worker representatives warned the civic administration that if positive action is not taken within the next seven days, sanitation workers across the city will launch an indefinite strike and stop work completely. They also stated that any sanitation or public health crisis arising from such a strike would be the sole responsibility of the municipal administration.
Several labor union leaders and worker representatives were present during the protest, including Sultan Patel, Mangesh Patil, Mangesh More, Irfan Sheikh, and Jayashree Patil along with hundreds of sanitation workers
