The Maharashtra government has launched Marathi language workshops for Hindi-speaking auto-rickshaw drivers in Mira-Bhayandar under an initiative by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, with officials warning of action against drivers who fail to learn basic Marathi by May 16.
The Maharashtra government has launched a first-of-its-kind Marathi language workshop for auto-rickshaw drivers in Mira-Bhayandar under an innovative initiative conceptualized by Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik.
The workshop is being conducted by Sapna Kumari, a meritorious student who secured first rank in the Class 10 Marathi-medium board examinations despite being a Hindi-speaking student herself.
The initiative aims to teach Marathi to Hindi-speaking auto-rickshaw drivers in a simple and practical manner so they can communicate more effectively with passengers and improve public service across the city.
According to officials, similar workshops will now be organized at multiple local branches across Mira-Bhayandar to encourage wider participation among rickshaw drivers.
Authorities have also issued a strict warning stating that drivers who fail to learn basic Marathi language skills by May 16 may face action. The move is intended to promote the use of Marathi in daily public interactions and strengthen communication between drivers and commuters.
The initiative has sparked discussions across the city, with many residents welcoming efforts to encourage Marathi learning while others have called for a balanced and inclusive approach.
