Mayor Dimple Mehta Warns of Strict Action After Uttan Dumping Ground Fire
A massive fire at the Uttan dumping ground in Bhayandar West sent thick smoke and foul odour across nearby residential areas, raising serious health and environmental concerns among locals.
Mira-Bhayandar: Following the massive fire that erupted at the Uttan dumping ground in Bhayandar West on Thursday morning, Mayor Dimple Mehta issued a stern warning against any negligence in waste management operations and assured residents that strict action would be taken if irregularities are found.
The fire, which started around 9:30 AM, created panic in nearby areas as thick smoke and foul smell spread across Uttan, Dongri, Rai, Murdha, and Morva. Firefighters from the Kalpana Chawla Fire Station and Uttan Fire Brigade continued efforts for several hours to control the blaze.
Amid growing public anger over repeated fire incidents at the dumping site, Mayor Dimple Mehta said that the administration would not tolerate any wrongdoing by the company handling waste management operations at the site.
“If any company is found carrying out improper or negligent work, I will ensure justice for the residents of Uttan. Strict action will be taken, and even the tender can be cancelled if necessary,” the Mayor stated while responding to citizens’ concerns.
Residents have alleged that several waste-processing machines at the dumping ground are non-functional, leading to improper garbage treatment and repeated fire outbreaks. The dumping ground reportedly handles all waste generated from the Mira-Bhayandar region.
Locals have repeatedly raised concerns over environmental hazards, health risks, and unbearable living conditions caused by recurring smoke and foul odour from the site. Citizens are now demanding a permanent solution to the dumping ground crisis and stricter monitoring of waste management operations.
The incident has once again intensified pressure on civic authorities to address long-pending environmental and public health issues linked to the Uttan dumping ground.
