Massive Fire Breaks Out at Uttan Dumping Ground, Raising Fresh Health Concerns Among Residents
A major fire at the Uttan dumping ground in Bhayandar West spread thick smoke and foul smell across nearby areas, sparking renewed concerns over public health and waste management failures.
A massive fire broke out at the Uttan dumping ground in Bhayandar West on Thursday morning, triggering widespread concern among local residents over health and environmental hazards.
The incident occurred at around 9:30 am, following which thick smoke and a strong foul smell engulfed the entire Uttan area. Even by 2 pm, fire officials were struggling to bring the blaze completely under control.
After receiving information about the incident, fire engines from the Kalpana Chawla Fire Brigade and the Uttan Fire Brigade rushed to the spot and launched intensive firefighting operations.
The Uttan dumping ground is used for collecting and processing waste generated across the Mira-Bhayandar region. The waste management contract is currently handled by Saurashtra Company. However, reports suggest that the company’s machinery at the site has remained non-operational, leading to allegations from residents that waste is not being processed properly.
Local citizens pointed out that this is not the first time a fire has erupted at the dumping ground. Similar incidents have occurred repeatedly in the past, with residents accusing authorities of continuously ignoring the seriousness of the issue.
Residents also expressed frustration over repeated promises by the administration and political representatives to relocate the dumping ground, claiming that no concrete action has been taken despite assurances made during election campaigns.
The smoke and foul odour from the fire have severely affected people living in Uttan, Dongri, Rai, Murdha and Morwa areas. Locals fear a rise in respiratory illnesses, throat infections and other health-related problems due to prolonged exposure to the toxic smoke.
