Maharashtra Government Imposes Strict Austerity Rules: Foreign Trips of Ministers & Officials Banned
The Government of Maharashtra has introduced strict austerity measures, including a ban on foreign trips by ministers and government officials, as part of efforts to control public expenditure and enforce fiscal discipline across departments.
In a major cost-cutting and fuel-saving move, the Government of Maharashtra has issued strict new guidelines restricting foreign travel for ministers and government officials. The decision comes following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for austerity and economic discipline amid rising global uncertainties.
According to the new directives, all foreign tours, study visits, and official overseas travel of ministers and officers have been suspended. The government has also imposed a ban on the use of private charter aircraft and instructed officials to prioritize public transport for official travel.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was also seen arriving at the Vidhan Bhavan on a motorbike, sending a symbolic message promoting fuel conservation and reduced government expenditure.
The Maharashtra government has further ordered departments to reduce vehicle usage, cut unnecessary expenses, and encourage online meetings and video conferences instead of physical gatherings. Universities and colleges have also been advised to conduct more activities virtually.
Key directives issued by the government include:
* Restrictions on foreign tours and luxury travel
* Reduction in government vehicle usage
* Preference for buses, trains, and public transport
* Promotion of virtual meetings and conferences
* Cost-cutting measures across departments
* Energy-saving rules in government offices and public places
Meanwhile, senior leader Sharad Pawar stated that Prime Minister Modi’s appeal should be taken seriously and discussed collectively at the national level.
The government says the move aims to control unnecessary expenditure, conserve fuel, and improve administrative efficiency during challenging economic conditions.
